  Truth

  i imagine part of the draw of the jws is the fact that they claim to have all the answers and the ultimate truth.

  it's true they seen to on the outside provide many "answers" to many questions but now that i know these answers aren't the absolute truth that i once thought they were my mind is now open to a whole new world of ideas and theories and explanations.

  assuming that logically there is only one absolute truth in the universe (that in itself is a huge assumption but bare with me) then it is easy to get tied down and overwelmed by the shear volume of differing info and ideas available to mankind.

  You could just focus on science and math and leave philosophy alone for awhile; afterall, philosophy is "all talk," albeit sometimes very interesting talk. Or you could look into secular humanism.

  Faith in God

  is "faith in god" a level of suspicion about existence ?

  i postulate that it is not.. it was put forward in a thread above that jws must have had some 'faith in an unseen deity', but i reflected that they must have simply had a notion regarding the existence of another power, and that faith in someone reflects a belief in the quality of another, not just a suspicion of quantity.. jws normally do not have faith in the deity described in scripture and hence, in a confused fear, work in the attempt to appease and be accepted, not only misunderstanding love in general but misrepresenting the same to others.

  the mandate for performance of works is a faith in the value of their own effort (and that there is likely a deity who is like a boss-man).. .

  All I ever heard (growing up a jw) regarding faith was that "faith without works is dead" - meaning that if you did not go out in field svc and bring others into the fold, your faith was meaningless. Well, I guess it doesn't bring the society much money if all its members have is faith, but don't work for free and bring it more money by bringing in more free labor and followers who will buy and re-sell the books and other Wt crap.

  it's frigging cold out there!!!

  christ almighty when i went outside to start my car up this morning i thought i was going to freeze solid like lot's wife.

  Yep. It's been cold here the last 3 weeks but REALLY cold for the last 5 or 6 days........where the hell is all this Global Warming??!! -Mary

  It's "global climate change," which includes but is not limited to "warming;" although I don't know enough about meteorology to say if this is a localized weather issue or related to global warming or not.

  Anyway, it is friggin' cold.

  it went down to 17 effing degrees here, with a windchill of 10 last night! That's a bit unusual and it's staying pretty chilly all day for about a week now; we had 70 degree weather a few weeks ago. it's crazy!

  NC is usually fairly temperate with very mild winters and rare freezes. it usu doesn't stay cold so long here, though feb is nastier anyway here than most other mos for cold.

  oooo i hate extremes, either way - hotorcold.

  i was taking a break from this board but in a last few days there has been unexpected development in my own family.

  my mom is leaving wtbs!!!

  she apparently celebrated christmas with dad but even that was just a tip of the iceberg.

  when i commented on the case of the canadain sextuplets i referred to an essay of two german jw attorneys, armin pikl (jw lawyer) and gajus glockentin (bethelite) from the year 1998. i turned some pages and came across another remarkable statement.

  the statement on page 30 deals with the accusation that jw would tell their members to break professional descrition.

  I hate the way they write things:

  "person has the right to initiate measures on the part of the youth welfare office and the law for the protection of the children"

  Should they not say the person (who knows of abuse) has the responsibility (rather than "right") to report it? They go around their elbow to

  get to their knees and instead of stressing the importance of protecting the victim, they point out that the unnamed organization's reputation is

  at stake. "According to reports" is also just annoying. They should just state the facts without all kinds of gobbldegook inuendoe.

  cano, 50, of the hamlet of wallkill, was sentenced in orange county court to two to six years behind bars for propositioning underage boys in middletown last summer.
